Molesey
Old Possum's Book of Practical CatsMolesey is the setting for the barge episode in which a tranquil summer night gives way to a silent encirclement. Its brief appearance places the scene’s intimacy and danger in the same moonlit landscape.
The Moonlit Barge
On a peaceful summer night, the moon shines over the barge lying at Molesey. The vessel rocks on the tide, and Growltiger, relaxed and expecting no surprise, is disposed to show his sentimental side. The setting initially seems calm, making the approach of danger all the more stark.
Encirclement and Danger
That calm is broken by the approaching sampans. Moonlight catches the reflection of a thousand bright blue eyes as the boats circle closer, yet the enemy makes no sound. With the barge surrounded, the lovers sing their last duet in danger of their lives. Molesey thus marks the scene’s shift from moonlit repose to imminent peril.
